About the Breed :

Country of Origin: Western Siberia.

Size: Height: 53 – 57 cm (20.75 – 22.5 inches); Weight: 35-65 pounds

Coat: Topcoat is straight and wiry, and the undercoat is dense and short. Can be white, cream, or white with light brown.

Character: This dog is a complex one. It is friendly, intelligent, and somewhat obedient, but it can be obstinate and stubborn. It can be dominant and watchful, yet sensitive and gentle-natured. Samoyeds love to bark.

Temperament: Samoyeds are gentle with children but may try to dominate other dogs. They have a strong hunting instinct so they will chase other animals. They need to be trained early to get along with your other pets.

Care: Too much brushing can harm the undercoat. A metal comb should be used to remove loose hairs during shedding.

Training: Training can be a challenge and needs to start early. Variety in the drills is key, as Samoyeds can get bored if asked to do the same task over and over and refuse to do anything. Screaming, shouting or hitting will not get the dog’s respect, in fact it will produce the opposite effect. The dog will need to see you as both an authority figure and a friend. It must be trained to come to you when very young.

Activity: This dog needs plenty of exercise. Three short walks a day is not enough for this breed. Take it for very long walks, or have it run alongside you as you ride a bicycle or go jogging. They like to wander, so a good fence around the yard is required.

About the Breed :

Country of Origin: Schnauzers (meaning ‘small beard’ in German) are named after an actual dog, ‘Schnauzer’ who lived in Germany in the 1870s, but the breed itself existed as far back as the Middle Ages. This is evidenced by various sculptures and Rembrandt paintings. Early Schnauzers were likely derived by crossing gray spitzes with black poodles. This resulted in an adept rat hunter and guardian that became incredibly popular by the early 1900s, due in part to its distinct appearance. Standard Schnauzers (or ‘Mittelschnauzers’) became popular in World War I by serving as messengers and police dogs and increased in popularity as a pet after World War II.

Size: The Standard Schnauzer has a shoulder height of 43-51 cm (17-20 in) and weighs 16-20 kg (35-45 lbs). The Standard Schnauzer has a long, rectangular head with small, deep eyes and highly set ears that may be cropped or uncropped. Standard Schnauzers have a slightly sloped back, highly set, erect tail, and small, round ‘cat feet’.

Character: The Standard Schnauzer is even-tempered and an eager, intelligent learner. It is brave and fun, making and an excellent companion. Standard Schnauzers also make fine guard dogs as they are loyal, protective, and alert. At times, they may be pushy if they don’t know who’s boss.

Temperament: The Standard Schnauzer gets along great with familiar children, dogs, and other pets, but is wary and cautious with people and animals it does not know. Standard Schnauzers best behave when given sufficient exercise and human companionship. They don’t get along with other dogs as well as the Miniature Schnauzer, but they bark less often.

About the Breed :

Country of Origin: The Vizsla (pronounced ‘veezhla’, ‘zh’ as in ‘vision’), also known as the ‘Hungarian Vizsla’, ‘Hungarian Pointer’, or ‘Magyar Vizsla’, is an ancient Hungarian breed. It was used by the Magyar tribe of the Carpathian Basin for rat hunting as far back as 800 A.D, and later adapted for pointing, retrieving, and tracking. The first written record of the Vizsla appears in the ‘Illustrated Vienna’ chronicle, prepared on order of King Louis the Great in 1357. Vizslas faced near extinction in the 1800’s, falling in popularity to the English pointer. The Vizsla is an ancestor of the Weimaraner and German Shorthaired Pointer, and these breeds may have been later crossed back into the Vizsla. The rare Wirehaired Vizsla (only a few hundred exist in North America) was developed by crossing the Vizsla with the German Wirehaired Pointer and Griffon in the 1930’s for a dog with heavier coat for hunting in cold weather. A Vizsla named Sari was the first Vizsla imported to the United States, in 1950. The Vizsla was recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1960 and is today a popular show dog, hunter, and pet.

Size: The smooth haired Vizsla has a shoulder height of 52-61 cm (20-24 in). The wirehaired Vizsla is slightly taller at 54-62 cm (21-24 in). Vizslas weigh 18-29 kg (40-65 lbs). They have long, low set ears, eye color fitting with the coat color, white teeth, and moderate stop (depression where the muzzle meets the forehead). The Vizsla has a tail which is usually docked at two thirds the natural length (three quarters in wirehaired) and small, round ‘cat feet’. It is a medium sized, muscular, lean dog.

Character: The Vizsla is affectionate and intelligent. It is known for its loyalty. Vizslas are very energetic and will become destructive if ignored or not sufficiently exercised.

Temperament: The Vizsla is very gentle and gets along well with children, other dogs, and any household pets. It will bark at strangers.
